Recent reports point to the huge increase in water consumption and Microsoft in its latest environmental report state an increase of 34% between 2021 and 2022 (equivalent of more than 2,500 Olympic swimming pools) of it's water use. A researcher at the University of California, Riverside, who is trying to quantify the impact of AI technology, Shaolei Ren estimates that this increase is in a large part due to the development of AI.
