Mayor HAU's Welcome Message

This will be an international event, an unprecedented
experience-sharing platform for local authorities.
Be there. Make the most of it.

Greetings from Taipei!

As mayor of the host city for the 5th UCLG ASPAC Congress, it is with great pleasure that I extend our warmest welcome to all the delegates and participants coming to Taipei in September.

The central theme of the congress is “An Adaptive City: Embedding Design in City Governance”. This congress will focus on four topics: development and application of the smart city, adaptive city design in motion, the development trend of green transportation, and constructing a recycling and zero waste society.

Discussing these four areas with so many leaders, specialists and experts in local government affairs will surely lead all of us to new insights and advance our understanding of the connections among urban development, environmental protection and design.

This exchange of ideas may also enable us to discover new avenues for fruitful collaboration. Such a gathering is a unique opportunity to explore how city government can improve residents’ quality of life, and I am confident that the event will be stimulating and productive for all involved.

With the full support of Taipei City Government and the enthusiasm of the people of Taipei, I can assure you this congress is set to be a resounding success. We're looking forward to seeing you soon!

Lung-Bin Hau
Mayor of Taipei City

Welcome Message From President of UCLG ASPAC

Dear Members,

It is with great pleasure for me to welcome you to the Fifth UCLG ASPAC Congress, in the modern and eco-friendly city of Taipei in early September 2014.

The topic of the Congress is ‘Adaptive City: Embedding Design in City Governance.’ On this occasion, all members and partners will have the chance to share ideas for a sustainable living.

Endurable lifestyle begins from a recycling society and from the citizen’s effort into adapting its city development with environmental protection in place.

As you are all aware, conditions around the world continue to change dramatically as urbanization and globalization in particular continues apace. The key to enhance an ideal development is to accommodate future needs and aspirations and at the same time embrace the positive aspects of our past.

I invite everyone to focus on this year’s topic. Let’s make it a source for all of us around Asia-Pacific and beyond to turn our cities and regions into an eco-friendly environment in line with the harmonious balance between history and modernity.

Design of cities and municipalities and their development deeply reflect the people who live in them. Each one of the local governments in Asia-Pacific should be an example of sustainable change with a focus on people-oriented development and planning.

I am sincerely grateful for your cooperation during my Presidency, which will come to an end in Taipei. Your active involvement in various occasions and forums in different parts of the world has been impressive. UCLG ASPAC does its best to accommodate all members and to put into practice suggestions from participants.

I would like to thank all the members for entrusting me with this position and for supporting me throughout my assignment.
I wish my successor well in further advancing United Cities and Local Governments Asia- Pacific.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you in Taipei.

Sincerely,

Syed Muhammad Asghar Shah Gillani
UCLG ASPAC President
