Dr. Eric Liluan Chu

Mayor of New Taipei City

Born on June 7, 1961, Dr. Eric Liluan Chu is the incumbent Mayor of New Taipei City.

Dr. Eric Chu graduated from New York University with a Ph. D. in Accounting in 1991.
He became the first mayor of New Taipei City when New Taipei's predecessor entity Taipei County was upgraded to a special municipality in 2010.

Before Dr. Eric Chu was successfully elected mayor in the 2010 mayoral election, he served as the Vice Premier of the Republic of China from 2009 to 2010. He was also the Minister of the Consumer Protection Commission, an independent regulatory agency subordinate to the Executive Yuan, as well as the Vice Chairman of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT). Dr. Chu’s other career highlights include: the Magistrate of Taoyuan County, R.O.C (Taiwan) from 2001 to 2009, and Chairman of the Budgetary Committee & Finance Committee of the Legislative Yuan, R.O.C (Taiwan) from 1998 to 2001.

Prior to his political career, Dr. Chu worked as an Assistant Professor at Baruch College, the City University of New York between 1990 and 1992. In 1992, he started teaching at the National Taiwan University (NTU) as an associate professor until 1997. In that year, Dr. Chu received tenure at NTU and began teaching as a full professor.
